Description of the regional energy and climate strategy: pdf (update May 2013)

More about the region:

Norrbotten and Västerbotten are Swedens largest counties and stand for one third of Sweden´s total land area. Norrbotten county has 14 municipalities with about 250 000 inhabitants in total, Västerbotten county 15 municipalities with about 260 000 inhabitants. To create networks and to interact is highly important for such a large area with few residents and many small and medium enterprises.

Kebnekaise (2.107 m), Sweden’s highest peak, is located in Norrbotten, as well as Sweden’s deepest lake, Hornavan.

Västerbotten has a varied nature, ranging from the rugged coastal scenery of the Baltic Sea to the majestic mountains in the west near to the border with Norway. In between you can find regions with endless forests and rich fauna and flora. Västerbotten´s capital Umeå will be European Capital of Culture 2014.

The climate is cold, but the long, bright summer days make it possible to grow various grains.

In Norrbotten County there are 20 hydropower plants producing more than 14 TWh of electricity per year. This represents 11 percent of Sweden’s total electricity production. 2010 the federal Government appointed Norrbotten, Sweden’s third “green pilot county”, together with Skåne and Dalarna.
